Mission

"HECMA is the preeminent organization committed to the advancement of higher education case management. Comprised of professionals from clinical and non-clinical post-secondary settings, HECMA leads the field in developing best practices and standards, disseminating relevant knowledge, and strengthening institutional efforts for holistic care. HECMA provides support to professionals in their collaborative, inclusive approach to promote campus safety and student success."

History

HECMA began in 2008, following the Virginia Tech shooting. 13 institutions and 25 attendees from across the country to meet in Blacksburg, Virginia, to discuss the changing landscape of higher education and specifically, the evolution of Case Management. ​The follow institutions were part this roundtable which laid the foundation for the Higher Education Case Managers Association:

In 2011, the name Higher Education Case Managers Association was establish and mission and vision statements accepted. In 2012, the first Leadership Team members were established at the Iowa State Roundtable. A constitution, membership structure, branding, and logo were also established.

In 2014, HECMA was approved for a 501(c)(3) status, making it a non-profit organization. In 2016, HECMA was accepted as the 43rd member organization in the Council for Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS).

 

​In 2018, HECMA celebrates 10 years by transitioning from a Roundtable to an official conference. The 10th annual conference is held in Williamsburg, Virginia which is the first time the group meets at conference venue instead of on a campus. In 2019, the CAS Standards for Higher Education Case Management were released, with the assistance of multiple HECMA members.

About
Ansley

Ansley Long is a current Master's student in the College Student Affairs Administration program at the University of Georgia. She holds a graduate assistantship in Student Care and Outreach, housed within the Office of the Dean of Students. One of her primary roles within this position includes providing support to the Embark@UGA program, a program designed to support students who have experiences in foster care and/or homelessness. Additionally, her responsibilities include advising the Dean of Students Ambassadors and serving as a case manager on an as-needed basis.​ It was here in her assistantship where Ansley found an interest in higher education case management and HECMA.

Ansley graduated from the University of Georgia in 2018 with a Bachelors of Science in Human Development and Family Science and a minor in Leadership in Student Affairs. During undergraduate years, her involvement included greek life, campus ministry, and campus philanthropies such as Relay for Life. 

Ansley has held various internships within the field of Student Affairs such as New Student Orientation at Texas A&M University, Student Activities and Involvement at the University of Georgia, and Recruitment and Career Development within the UGA College of Pharmacy.
